DESCRIPTION:LET OP: Zittend concert.\nETRAN DE L’AÏR – Hypnotiserende desert blues uit Niger\nAl ruim 20 jaar speelt deze Etran de L’Aïr (de Sterren uit Aïr, een bergachtige regio in het noorden van Niger) in de ‘gitaarstad’ Agadez op trouwfeesten, doopceremonies en politieke evenementen. Het is de bekendste en langst spelende groep, maar tegelijkertijd weinig bekend in het westen in vergelijking met bands als Mdou Moctar en Bombino.\nHet is dan ook een unieke band: niet alleen is het een familieband en komen ze uit de arbeidersklasse voort, ze spelen ook muziek die de multi-etniciteit van hedendaags Niger representeert. Volgens de manager “speelt de band voor mensen die geen geld hebben. Als een trouwerij geen dure muzikanten kan betalen, huren ze Etran De L’Aïr in.”\nNaast de zo bekende woestijnblues incorporeert Etran De L’Aïr ook Mande muziek en zelfs soukous in hun composities. Zelf zeggen ze: “we play our own folklore, not like the other artists in Agadez. Our music is based around traditional takamba…and we listen to a lot of Malian music. Etran’s brand of Sahara blues deviates with its use of three guitars instead of two, sounding more live-wired and unfettered than any of their peers. Operating already for more than 20 years on a headstrong grassroots level, this band stands at the vanguard of innovation, drawing from more artists like Oumou Sangaré and Ali Farka Touré than the established Tuareg ensembles. \nEtran De L’Aïr does not belong to the upper class. “They make music for people who don’t have money,” says the manager. “If a wedding can’t afford the expensive musicians, they hire Etran.” It’s an unique band: it’s not only a working class band and a family band, the group also plays a style that captures the contemporary sound of Agadez, incorporating vastly different ethnic musics into their repertoire, like Mande music and even soukous.
